A range of events and activities are planned from the Horsham and surrounds area during the week leading up to Remembrance Day on Sunday, November 11.
Commemorations started on Sunday, November 4 when the Horsham RSL launched its Century of Military Service Exhibition.
Hundreds of military items and records will be on display every day between Monday, November 5, and Friday, November 9 in the Horsham RSL Conference Room.
RSL Military History and Heritage Group member Jim Amos said the exhibition would help keep the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“The RSL wished to give the community the opportunity during the week leading up to and including Remembrance Day to remember and honour those servicemen and women who have secured the peace of our great nation over the last century,” he said.
The exhibition is free and open daily from 10am to 4pm.
Another free display, Fate of the Imperials: the 1914 Warracknabeal Premiership team at war, will be exhibited at the Wimmera Regional Library until Monday, November 12.
The exhibition will be open during the library’s opening hours.
Historian Pam Cupper presented an overview of the final days on the Western Front on Sunday, November 4, reflecting on the sacrifices made by Horsham and District people during the war.
A visual and lighting display will light up Firebrace Street, Horsham between Monday, November 5 and Sunday, November 11.
From sunset each night a five minute long display will be projected onto the side of Horsham Post Office.
The display will feature images from the First World War and commemorate the 463 service men from Horsham and District who gave their lives.
The project was developed by Horsham Historical Society, Horsham RSL, Horsham Rural City Council and Vornehm Audio Visual.
Displays will decorate Firebrace Street, Horsham featuring poppies and Remembrance Day banners.
Horsham RSL will hold its annual Remembrance Day Commemorative Service at Sawyer Park on Sunday, November 11 starting at 10.45am.
A special service will mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice at ANZAC Centenary Bridge, Horsham on Sunday, November 11 from 7.45 pm.
