Purcell spent two seasons with the Burras in the Wimmera Football League and had an immediate impact.
The 26-year-old has also coached at Taylors Lake. He said he was excited by the new opportunity.
“I will have to get to know everyone and getting to know their style of play and come up with some ideas,” he said.
“I saw the grand final this year and there were a lot of big bodied players and most sides would have some former Victorian Football League and Geelong Football League players running around, so there are a lot of good players in the league. It’s the bottom six that lose you the games.”
Purcell joins Minyip-Murtoa alongside former Burras coach Damian Cameron and ruckman Matt Coleman.
“Damian and I get along really well and see eye-to-eye and I think we have a lot of respect for each other,” Purcell said.
“We also have a few guys coming from Melbourne. Donald finished third last season and we have obviously picked up a couple of handy players.”
Purcell said he had no intentions of leaving Minyip-Murtoa, but could not pass up the opportunity to be a senior coach again.
“I really enjoyed my time at Minyip-Murtoa,” he said.
“I had no intention of leaving I just got the coaching offer and I wanted to get back into it. I had a couple of years off coaching when we started our business and that’s going well now. I’d love to get back into it and they had a job for me and I took it.
“I wish Minyip-Murtoa all the best and hope John Delahunty can take them to that next level.”
