However, that’s exactly what she became earlier this year when she released her debut self-help book Booked Out, Valued & Paid.
Ms Murray was born and raised in Horsham, living there for more than 40 years before she made the move to the coast – first to Geelong and now Torquay.
Her father, Brian Murray, owned and ran Murray Studios in Horsham.
“We were born into taking photographs. It was an amazing life as a kid to see photos appear on pieces of paper,” she said.
“I was into the retail side of it; I loved working in the shop and developing film. I later decided I wanted to be a photographer after being around it all for so long.
“We won best photographic store in Australia in 2002, but by 2008 we had closed the doors because digital had come and changed everything.”
Although she no longer takes photographs, she has become a full-time mentor for other photographers.
She said the aim of the book was to help other photographers get their name out there and succeed in social media. Ms Murray has been able to help people from around the world.
“It had never occurred to me that I could write a book. When I moved to Geelong I had two years off because I had worn my body out from working so hard in Horsham,” she said.
“When I started working again, it was like I had hit the jackpot with Facebook. Then I became obsessed with why it worked and how it worked and why social media is so different to every other form of marketing.
“I was very busy in my own studio that I run from home in Geelong, but I had thousands of photographers asking me to help them too. It started with a few workshops and it just grew from there. The main thing people ask me about is how to get clients that value them.”
It took Ms Murray six moths to write the book and it was released in July.
“We’ve sold a lot of copies without advertising it much, which is really cool,” she said.
It is available from her website www.annieography.com and Amazon.
