ST MICHAEL’S have flexed their muscle in Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant tennis, with a big win against second placed Horsham Lawn in round 5.

The match started evenly, with two sets apiece after the first round of doubles. St Michael’s however excelled in the singles, setting up their six set victory by winning all four singles matches.
In what was touted to be an intriguing contest in men’s line one, St Michael’s Steffi McDonald played blistering tennis against Jae McGrath to take an 8-1 set victory in their singles battle.
McGrath earned payback however in both of their doubles contests, with his big serve and forehand getting Lawn two of their four set wins.
With the 10-102 to 4-63 win, St Michael’s remain the only undefeated side in the competition and have solidified their place at the top of the standings with a two game lead ahead of Lawn, Drung South and Kalkee.
Meanwhile Drung South continued their resurgence, defeating Haven for their third win in a row after two losses to start the year.
Most sets were closely contested between the two sides, but Drung South proved too good, taking an 11-103 to 3-70 win. Drung South’s good form after a rusty start sets up a mouthwatering grand final replay against St Michael’s next weekend, in what is sure to be the match of the round.
Kalkee also scored an eight set win against Telangatuk East 11-100 to 3-64. Kate Rogers fought hard for Telangatuk East, winning two of her three sets and only just losing her last doubles tie with Kayla Hawker 8-7. Despite Rogers best efforts, It wasn’t quite enough for the newly promoted side to get their first win of the season against one of the competitions best sides.
In A SPECIAL, Brimpaen remain on top of the ladder after a close win against Central Park Blue, 8-86 to 6-78. The two sides traded sets for most of the day, but a great performance in the singles matches set up the win.
Central Park Red also had a close win against Noradjuha, losing more games but winning more sets, 8-78 to 6-85. Natimuk scored an impressive victory against Horsham Lawn 9-91 to 5-75, while Drung South defeated Homers 10-99 to 6-67.
In A GRADE Kalkee defeated Brimpaen after they finished even on sets 6-97 to 6-55, while Central Park, Horsham Lawn and Laharum also secured wins.
In B SPECIAL both Horsham Lawn and Central Park secured victories.
