The newly created Youth Specialist Officer role will be filled by Senior Constable Clyde Lourensz, who will be returning to Horsham to take up the position.
Acting Inspector Dave Ellis said similar roles would be rolled out across the state.
“It’s a new position that has come from the result of the community safety statement from last year. There have been specialist officers rolled out in just about all front line divisions across the state,” he said.
“The idea is to develop a specialist interface through support agencies to focus police and support services to at risk youth, and also to provide specialist advice to our own members in dealing with serious youth offending.
“He will also focus on early prevention towards young people. The role will be to co-ordinate support and engage with the community.
“It will be a very proactive position and one that will definitely support the young people in our community.”
Senior Constable Clyde Lourensz will start in his new role in early December.
