Iris died peacefully at the age of 81 at Warracknabeal hospital on November 10. She is survived by her son Colin, daughter-in-law Lisa, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
Her son Kevin and husband Martin are both passed.
Colin said his mother was a generous person and great supporter of the Minyip community.
“She was secretary for Minyip Show for many years and was determined to keep it going. If there was a group or committee that was for the betterment of Minyip, she was in it,” she said.
“If there was anything she could do for anyone, she would do it. She used to be an unofficial taxi driver for people who were sick and take them to doctor’s appointments.
“She was a very caring person, a loving mum, grandmother and great-grandmother, and worked hard all her life. She also always saw the good in people.”
Iris was born on June 20, 1937 to Hilda and Wally Bothe.
She attended Antwerp Primary School and then Dimboola Memorial High School for one year before spending two years at Immanuel Lutheran College in Adelaide.
When she returned to the Wimmera, she helped her parents on the family farm at Antwerp. Iris met Martin Wiese at a dance at Arkona when she was 17.
The couple married on August 31, 1957, and had two sons – Colin and Kevin. The family first lived at Areegra and then moved to Minyip.
Over the years the family home was filled with many boarders.
“At any given time there would be up to five extras for meals to cook, I don’t know how she did it. Always happy, always cooking over a wood stove,” Colin said.
Iris was named the Minyip Citizen of the Year in 2014, and was involved in a wide range of community groups and organisations. She was involved with the Minyip School Mother’s Club, Minyip Country Women’s Association, Minyip Progress Association, Minyip Senior Citizens and Minyip Show Committee.
She was also president of the Minyip Senior Citizens. Iris was actively involved in the Minyip Bowls Club and was a great supporter of Arts Minyip.
Iris Wiese’s funeral will be held at Minyip Lutheran Church on Monday, November 19 from 2pm.
