I SEEK to praise the Horsham Rural City Council outdoor staff – particularly the landscape gardeners and apprentices – for their enthusiastic and constant care of the many garden beds, large and small, around the streets.

Their work helps to liven, beautify and soften our streets.
The botanic gardens are a place of quietness for healing and meditation, as well as a place for our little ones to stretch their legs and have fun with their picnicking families.
Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your care and encouragement to other gardeners in our own environment and homes.

Support will aid hospice
ON BEHALF of Wimmera Hospice Care Auxiliary, I wish to thank all those who attended or contributed to the Garden Walk on Sunday, October 28.
It was a wonderfully happy event held on a perfect sunny afternoon and the response was fantastic from the Horsham and district public.
The owners of the beautiful gardens on display had worked tirelessly to have all in place for the garden walk and their efforts have helped us to reach an outstanding fundraising total of $6251.70.
All of this total will be used for the ongoing and dedicated care provided by the hospice department of Wimmera Health Care Group.
The auxiliary wishes to acknowledge Wimmera Aquatrail, Horsham Mitre 10, Jo Gardner from Australian Wildflowers and Horsham Croquet Club for their support.
Your generosity was amazing.
We also acknowledge the husbands of our members who willingly transported tables, plants umbrellas and any other item required to help make this event the success it was.
We simply could not have achieved the outcome without your willing and generous assistance.
Thanks to those who potted plants and made craft items for the stalls and to all the lovely ladies who made fresh scones and jam for the afternoon tea.
Finally, a heartfelt thanks to the fantastic members of this auxiliary.
It is such a privilege to be president of this dedicated band of ladies and you all did a wonderful job. Congratulations, ladies.
Lea Crammond, president, Wimmera Hospice Care Auxiliary
Focus on future growth
WE NEED the Horsham Aerodrome extended by at least 2000 metres both ways – and not next year, but now.
If the Horsham Rural City Council can’t make up their minds, they must support their colleagues who can make up their minds.
It was suggested to our Member for Mallee Andrew Broad to ask the federal government for funds to allow larger firefighting planes to land at Horsham – not just the helicopters.
We need all councillors to build this city and not be 30 years behind or wait for that damn bypass to be built.
When I started on the Country Roads Board (CRB) in 1971, we were talking about the bypass.
They say talk is cheap. I don’t believe it will be built for 10 to 20 years.
I believe Flacks Road to Gatehouse Road, along with Harris Road (formerly Aerodrome Road) to be closed as they’re only goat tracks.
I ask Gary Bird, a former councillor, to come back to council and help councillors John Robinson and David Grimble to keep building this city.
There was talk to shift the rail line north of this city.
I have seen very long trains stopped in Horsham with lengths of 140 carriages from the station to the crossing at Horsham College. These trains come from WA to Melbourne and to Queensland.
As for the bypass, there was only one or two VicRoads engineers who suggested it start at Burnt Creek and go to the west of this great city. It’s a pity they’re looking down on us now.
We need to grow, not to watch other cities grow while we sit still.

Donation recognition
THE Australian Red Cross Blood Service would like to thank donors from Horsham for their generosity when the mobile donor centre visited recently.
You gave 473 donations, saving an incredible 1419 lives.
One in three Australians will need blood or a blood product in their lifetime, but only one in 30 donates.
The mobile donor centre will next visit Horsham from Monday, February 4 to Friday, February 22.
Please call 13 14 95 to make an appointment or visit www.donateblood.com.au for more information.

Tributes follow tragedy
A GOOD reminder for Melbournians and visitors to Melbourne would be to have a bronze statue of Sisto outside Pellegrini’s, or a large brass plaque in the footpath outside Pellegrini’s, or a large brass plaque on the exterior of Pellegrini’s.
It could include a simple and frank message: “Culture will always triumph over barbarity.”
