Kurra-Wirra stud has acquired the entirety of The Mountain Dam stud after principals Tom and Alison Silcock decided to sell the operation. The pair had run the stud for 30 years.
Mr Silcock will now work in the management and promotions side of Kurra-Wirra stud as an adviser.
He said he looked forward to working with the Close family.
“I hope to add my knowledge and experience to their own to make decisions on future genetics going forward,” he said.
“They, like a lot of people, were interested in obtaining some of the genetics, but they were the only ones to put a proposal forward to buy the whole operation.”
The parcel of sheep involved in the sale was about 900.
Kurra-Wirra stud farm manager Anthony Close said it was a substantial purchase for the stud.
“We’re really just trying to step up our operation and increase our commitment to an industry that we think is a great one,” he said.
“Tom will be coming on in a reasonably significant capacity; he will continue to do his classing runs with his clients.”
Kurra-Wirra stud will hold its on property ram sale on Friday, November 23 from 10am.
“There will be a bit of excitement around the purchase, but we’re really happy with the sheep we’re breeding. The addition of the The Mountain Dam sheep will just add on to that,” he said.
“We’re hoping to have some good competition because it’s a good time to be in merinos. It’s a nice reliable production industry.”
