Natimuk Police Leading Senior Constable Pete Mellingtton said crews were called to an Elmes Street property at 9am on Saturday.
“The small, deliberately lit fire was in the front yard of a property in Natimuk,” he said.
“Country Fire Authority crews attended the scene and made sure the fire was fully extinguished.
“Police are continuing inquiries into the reason the fire was deliberately lit on a Total Fire Ban day.”
No fires can be lit in the open air on a Total Fire Ban day. The CFA had advised residents that the fire danger rating for the Wimmera and Mallee was severe on Saturday.
