The recently-established Smart Artz Theatre Company will stage its adaptation of The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy in July next year, with auditions later this month.
Smart Artz is the brainchild of local performing arts stalwarts Larissa Riddell and Amy Anselmi and was launched last week.
“We started Kicks Up The Arts training studio around three years ago, working with students from years four to 12,” Ms Anselmi said.
“We've really been blown away by their talent, their enthusiasm and creativity.”
Ms Riddell said the duo had been discussing plans for the group ever since KUTA began.
“Kick Up The Arts is about training and learning, but we thought we could... start exploring different performance styles and working with local festivals.”
Ms Anselmi said the group’s goal was to offer a new range of opportunities for local artists and audiences.
“We're not going to limit ourselves to musicals or plays, we're going to be guided by the performers here,” she said.
“We're excited about collaborating with local festivals, musicians, artists and choreographers.”
Ms Riddell said the group had already started creating original works.
“We've got some things in the bag that we've been working on, and Nati Frinj Biennale has already expressed some interest in picking up some of them,” she said.
While Smart Artz has plans to present original works at next year’s Art Is... Festival, the co-founders said the musical would be their first major production.
“We're starting with a real passion project, we both just absolutely love this musical,” Ms Anselmi said.
“The show itself is a bit of a time jump from the TV show.”
“Wednesday's grown up, she's 18, she's engaged to a nice boy from an ordinary family, and her parents are completely freaked out about that.”
Auditions will be held at Horsham College on Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16.
Call-backs will be held on Thursday, December 20. The group is looking for a range of performers, from age 10 and up.
