Horsham College student Emily Hutchinson said “the unknown” had been the hardest part. The wait has given Emily the chance to reflect back on her schooling.
When she first started at Horsham College Emily had dreams of becoming an architect. But over the last three years she realised her interest was in crime and law.
“I want to study a degree along the lines of criminal justice,” she said.
“The interest came from TV shows like Law and Order and all the news around crime rates – it just interested me from a young age.”
Most students start deciding their future career path from year 10. At the time, Emily said she felt the pressure, but did not regret it.
“We were encouraged to go above and beyond and start thinking about what we wanted to do in the future while keeping our options open,” she said. “At the time, I did think it was a bit of pressure, but I don’t regret it. I think it was the best thing I could have done for myself.”
Emily expected her final year to be more challenging, but great relationships with teachers helped her complete the year with ease.
St Brigid’s College student Gerard Natividad agreed that anticipation was the worst part, but he tried to remember that he has done his best.
“My mindset is always hoping for the best, but with no specific goal in mind,” he said. “If we put that pressure on ourselves, then it could lead to disappointment.
“If we worked hard and smart enough, the results will speak for themselves.”
Gerard has been changing his university preferences everyday for the past week, but he has his sight set on engineering.
“It is hard to decide what I want to do especially with engineering. I can research all about it but it’s only until I try it then I’ll know it’s the best choice for me,” he said.
