Laharum have also confirmed the signings of two new players and hope to secure several more before the start of the season.
Crawford, 22, joins head coach and fellow lifelong Laharum player Robbie Miller in the coaching ranks. Together they form one of the youngest coaching duos in the league. Crawford said he felt well prepared for the role.
“I’m pretty confident about it,” he said. “I’ve been at the club for a while and stepping into an assistant coaching role is something I’m pretty excited about.
“I’ve just finished a course at uni doing a bit of PE teaching and coaching, so that will hold me in good stead. Hopefully I can bring a bit of a new perspective to it.”
Crawford said he was looking forward to working closely with Miller.
“We’ve been at the club together pretty much ever since I started playing footy,” he said. “That relationship is going to be really good.”
Miller echoed Crawford’s positivity about working together, and said he hoped that other players would follow them in staying at the club for the long term.
“He is a young guy that has been at the club his whole life so we’re excited to see him step into a leadership role,” Miller said. “At this stage we’re set to lose a few young players but that is the nature of football, people want to try different things and different levels of footy.
“We wish them all the best – but hopefully we can encourage juniors and other guys to stick around a bit more in the future.”
Laharum have also confirmed two new signings, with half-back Tim Leahy joins from the Wedderburn Redbacks in the North Central Football League and swingman Alec Steff joining from Port Pirie.
Miller said they would both fill important positions next season.
