Senior Constable Adrian Hoggett said despite new laws for passing emergency vehicles being in place for about 18 months, large numbers of drivers continued to ignore them.
“People have to slow to at least 40km/h when passing an emergency vehicle,” he said.
“Last week I was parked on the roadside booking someone and at least 30 cars passed me in that time, and not one of them slowed down.”
In July 2017, new road laws were introduced in Victoria to improve safety for emergency and enforcement workers.
The law states drivers must not exceed a speed of 40km/h when passing emergency or escort vehicles that are stationary or moving slowly, and have either red and blue flashing lights, purple flashing lights, or an alarm sounding.
Senior Constable Hoggett also asked people to be extra cautious on the road during the school holiday period.
“Be safe when overtaking particularly, and don’t overtake on double lines,” he said.
“And please slow down. People are just driving crazy at the moment.”
