Horsham Saints’ players Tahlia Thomposn and Georgia Baker-Miller competed in the under-14s team while Ruby James from Jeparit and Penelope Drummond from Homers played some impressive cricket in the under-17s.
The Waves played seven matches across just four days as both teams made the final and finished runners-up in two impressive performances.
James was playing her first season in the under-17s after playing under-14s representative cricket last season.
She bowled tremendously throughout the week, taking seven wickets.
Waves under-17 coach Maddi Tobias was incredibly impressed with how James played across the tournament.
“She was fantastic,” Tobias said. “Coming up as a bottom age player, she can be up to three years younger than the other girls.
“But she bowled really well. Some matches she opened the bowling, and she fought hard with the bat more than a few times.
“She was incredible. She held herself very well in a really challenging tournament.”
Thompson and Baker-Miller also performed well in the runners-up under-14s team.
Baker-Miller took five wickets for the tournament and scored 17 runs with the bat. A highlight performance was her two wicket haul against the Northern Falcons.
Under-14s coach Grace Lee said Baker-Miller was excellent across the tournament.
“She bowled fantastic, a lot of really tight bowling in situations where we needed to keep them low scoring,” Lee said. “She really stepped up and it was great for her to play well and to build some confidence.”
Thompson was playing the rep cricket tournament for the first time having only recently taken up cricket. The talented youngster bowled four overs across the weekend taking one wicket, and batted three times for a total of four runs including one not-out.
“She took everything on board, every bit of feedback we had for her,” Lee said. “She showed that she has a lot of natural ability as well.”
Lee said it was a terrific week of growth for the competing girls.
“To stay away from home and all that it’s a huge thing for the country girls, but they handled it really well,” she said.
“To think we’re second in the state is pretty awesome.”
