VMSA president Lou Morsch announced Horsham had secured the rights to host the tournament on February 15, 16 and 17.
The event will be a boost to the town with up to 150 of Victoria’s top VMSA men and women players as well as contestants from Tasmania, New South Wales and South Australia coming to Horsham.
Morsch said Horsham deserved another go at hosting the event.
“Last year’s tournament ran very smoothly and we were really impressed with the effort Horsham Squash Club put in to the event,” Morsch said.
“Certainly, it’s a little further from Melbourne than we usually travel for these events but everyone had a great time last year so the decision to return was an easy one.”
Morsch said this year’s event would be a singles format to encourage some great competition from the best players. Morsch also encouraged Wimmera players to get involved.
“I would also love to see players entering from regional clubs such as Donald, Nhill, Naracoorte, Millicent, Hamilton, Ararat and Warrnambool,” Morsch said.
“We had a few Donald players enter last year and they were extremely competitive on the court.”
Horsham Squash Club president Chris Warrick said last year’s event was a great coup for his club.
“We have put a lot of work into upgrading the courts in the past 18 months and we are still making improvements for this tournament,” Warrick said. “We are also tweaking a few things from last year to improve player and spectator comfort.”
Warrick said the Horsham region would also benefit.
“Last year, many of the players stayed extra nights after the tournament and toured the region and I’ve heard that this year that many more are planning to extend their visit,” he said.
“We also introduced the Masters players to our own Horsham delicacy, the steak florentine which proved to be a hit with most.
“In fact, many players took freezer packs of florries back to Melbourne with them.
“They have already been asking if we are going to provide them on the barbecue menu again this year.”
VMSA events are open to men aged over 35 and women aged over 30. Entries for the Horsham summer tournament are open now on the VMSA website.
