A significant amount of skidmarks have been left at the intersection of Burrong Basin and Bunjils Cave Roads, near the Stawell Motorsports Complex in Black Range.
Police say the marks are from a recent incident and were not connected to any motorsports events.
Northern Grampians Highway Patrol Senior Constable Michael Petrov said police have a zero tolerance to irresponsible behaviour on the roads and will be investigating any kind of hoon activity that happens.
“The consequences of hoon behaviour includes impoundment of offenders vehicle for 30 days, court appearance which could result in a loss of licence, fines, and in some instances imprisonment,” he said.
Police are appealing for witnesses or information about the hoon activity which can be lodged through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The actions have also drawn the ire of those involved in motorsports in the region.
“We don’t condone or encourage any kind of hoon activity on public roads, our club works hard to put on events and keep it off the streets,” Stawell Motorsports Club president Russell Harris said.
“Competitive burnouts are run in a controlled environment with all of the correct safety procedures in place. We would much rather see people step up and enter events instead of being an idiot on the roads.”
The club regularly hosts burnout competitions just several hundred metres away from where the marks on the road have been found. The events have proven popular for revheads around the region as well as around the country, often bringing in more than 1000 people to competitions.
Wimmera Off Street Drag Racing and Burnout Club president Gavin Hynam said it is disappointing to see people make actions that fly in the face of what the Stawell club does.
“The Stawell Motorsports Club works really hard to run good events for the community, it is a shame that this is happening near their venue,” he said.
“These offenders are only thinking of themselves and not the social consequences of how they could hurt their mates, and damage the reputation of motorsports in our region.”
