The Nets announced they had signed Creek to a 10-day contract early on Saturday morning Australian time and it appeared he was not going to get a chance to play in his first official NBA game.

That was until Nets forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson banged heads with a Knicks player late in the fourth quarter and had to leave the game receiving four stitches for a cut on his eye.

Jefferson had two free throws which he couldn’t shoot so under NBA rules the opposition coach David Fizdale was able to pick the shooter from the Nets bench, he chose the Horsham-born Creek who nervously missed his first shot then made his second.

The Nets immediately fouled so they could sub Creek out, who was credited with two seconds on court, but he was still greeted with a slap on the backside from Nets coach Kenny Atkinson and an bevy of head rubs and high-fives from his teammates.

Post game Creek tweeted that it would be a day he would never forget, earlier on he sent a thank you tweet to supporters after his deal was announced.

Creek made a brave decision after captaining the Adelaide 36ers to the NBL grand final series last season, opting to leave the NBL after eight seasons and chase his NBA dreams.

The 26-year-old is known and clearly liked around the Nets since joining them in preseason as an “Exhibit 10” try-out player then moving to their NBA G-League side Long Island Nets where he has been among the best players averaging 14 points per game.

The Nets published a video of Nets assistant general manager Trajan Langdon calling Creek this week to tell him he they would be signing him to the NBA side with an emotional Creek speechless after hearing his NBA dream would come true.

One thing that will give Creek confidence is that fellow Long Island teammate Theo Pinson, who is on a two-way deal with the Nets – so moves between both sides, scored an NBA career-high 19 points against the Knicks.

Pinson was the centre of attention post game but gave some love to his G-League teammate.

"The best part was they picked him to shoot those free throws," Pinson said.

"I wish he made both but he gave us one of them. It's pretty cool to have a guy who has been through the grind down there in the G-League to get his chance here.

"It's fun to see."

Creek will get up to four more games with the Nets and they could also opt to sign him for another 10-days and possibly for the rest of the season if he performs well enough.

The Dallas Mavericks have long had eyes on Creek and, if he again becomes available, they may also offer him a 10-day deal while it’s understood several other clubs are tracking his progress.

Aside from the opportunity to stake his claim for a guaranteed NBA contract, the deal will net Creek a handsome return with 10-day deals worth around $US110,000 on top of the $US85,000 he will earn in the G-League.

Creek risked making just $US35,000 when he went to the US before his pre-season deal with the Nets gave him an additional $US50,000.

Creek has already signed with NBL expansion club South East Melbourne Phoenix for the next NBL season if his NBA dreams don’t work out.

Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman, also a Nets fan, also praised Creek on Saturday for showing NBL players can make it to the NBA.

"There are so many things happening that [NBL] players believe the NBA is close," Vickerman said.

"Us playing against NBA teams and having that real feel for it helps but also knowing that, if you do well in our league, you now have the opportunity to play in the NBA if your situation is right."

Creek is the first Australian to play for Brooklyn although New Zealand-born former NBA centre Sean Marks is their general manager.

Creek's NBA elevation means Australia's NBA roster is now at 11 players with young G-League centre Isaac Humphries continuing to push his case for an NBA try-out.

Deng Adel was picked up by Cleveland on a two-way deal earlier this month and he has already made his NBA debut so Creek will be the second Australian player elevated this season.

Creek's next chance to play will be on Tuesday Australian time when the Nets face Boston Celtics in Boston.
