From one end of the shire to the other, the whole of the agricultural sector has been very fortunate with timely rains, high productivity, and record-breaking commodity prices.
Our farmers rarely experience a year of such reward, and the flow on effect can only be extremely positive for 2019.
With the holiday season all but over and January almost complete, we were privileged to host our Australia Day Ambassador for 2019 – Ms Sue Calwell – in Edenhope and Harrow last weekend.
Sue spoke about her background and interests at both events.
She is an energetic and highly accomplished executive, having spent 20 years as executive director of the Melbourne Convention and Tourism Authority.
She has also been involved with the tourism and convention industries and contributes to a number of charities including the Baker Medical Research Institute Special Events Committee.
West Wimmera presented three Australia Day Awards.
This year there were joint winners in the Community Event of the Year category – one in Edenhope and one in Harrow.
The theme of both events was the 150th Anniversary of Australia’s First XI Indigenous Cricket Team’s Tour to England in 1868.
Helen Mulraney-Roll and her Edenhope Tourism Committee members organised commemoration events in Edenhope and Lake Bringalbert to mark the 150th Anniversary, and the First XI of 1868 Inc steering committee organised the First XI Legends Concert in Harrow.
In Kaniva, we presented the Citizen of the Year Award to Mr Alan Miles and the Young Citizen of the Year Award to Mr Justin Merrett.
Alan lives in Serviceton and is a long-standing community contributor.
Justin also lives in Serviceton and is undertaking a Certificate in Agriculture at Longerenong Agricultural College.
Both men are highly deserving recipients of these awards.
Finally, upcoming outdoor events of interest within the shire include Henley on Lake Wallace on February 9, the Lake Charlegrark Country Music Marathon on February 16 and 17 February, and the Goroke Rodeo on March 9.
Mayor Jodie Pretlove, West Wimmera Shire Council.
Jodie is also a member of the Lake Charlegrark Country Music Marathon Organising Committee.
