A new online video has been released to help gardeners monitor home gardens for the pest and keep it under control before it takes over gardens.
Queensland fruit flies become more active as the weather warms up and they will target ripening fruit and vegetables including stonefruit, tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants and citrus.
Agriculture Victoria's state-wide fruit fly co-ordinator Cathy Mansfield said more needed to be done to keep the pest under control.
“By understanding the lifecycle of Queensland fruit fly and how it behaves, Victorians will have a better chance of controlling it in gardens so that they can enjoy their home-grown fruit and vegetables,” she said.
“It’s important that everyone understands they have an important role to play to keep numbers down.”
More information and the video can be found at Agriculture Victoria’s website.
