The ADF-run program Good Sports is bringing its Tackling Illegal Drugs Forum to Horsham RSL on February 27.
Good Sports manager Mark Harris said people would learn what to do if drugs were found at their club, how to respond if a person was using or under the influence of drugs at their club, and what to do if someone was found dealing drugs at their club.
“We have been delivering the TID forums Australia-wide for over two years in communities where there are already many clubs that are part of our program to prevent alcohol-related harm,” Mr Harris said.
“The Tackling Illegal Drugs forum is the next step up from that… (it) will bring clubs together so they can build networks in the local area and receive the information and expert support they need to address potential drug-related issues,” he said.
“Individual clubs are then encouraged to show leadership in their community and use that knowledge to create an illegal drugs policy.”
Mr Harris said over 600 sports clubs nationwide had completed or begun to devise such a policy since Good Sports had started.
Horsham Colts Cricket Club President Dean Arnott will be one of the people attending the forum.
He said it would be significant, given he was not aware of any forum covering all types of drug use in sports clubs being held in Horsham until now.
“To see what signs to look for, and how to deal with it in an appropriate manner would be very important to us,” Mr Arnott said.
The forum takes place between 7 and 9pm. Interested clubs can register at http://horshamtidforum.eventbrite.com.au/.
It will be supported by the Wimmera Drug Action Taskforce and Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly, who are working closely with the community to help prevent harms from alcohol and other drugs.
The ADF receives Federal Government funding to hold TID forums.
Good Sports claimed it was helping more than 9,000 sporting organisations across Australia build healthier, more family-friendly environments.
