Yarriambiack Shire Mayor Graeme Massey thanked the government for their contribution.
"The intention now is to meet with the user groups of the leisure centre to flesh out the best way to utilize the money," he said.
Cr Massey said the pressing needs of the venue included having the floor resurfaced and updating the gymnasium equipment. He said the near-quarter of a million dollar commitment would not cover the entire cost of doing this.
"We'll be having a look at what we can add to that amount of money to satisfy the needs of the other groups," he said.
"We're not too sure how much we can commit in next year's budget at the moment, which is why we're meeting with the user groups."
Over 100 people regularly use the leisure centre, which was built more than 40 years ago.
The Southern Mallee Giants Football Netball Club was also allocated $53,800 so they could upgrade their netball courts.
Horsham Little Athletics Centre was allocated $22,000 to put towards an equipment shed.
Member for Mallee Andrew Broad said the grants were being given out under the Community Sport Infrastructure Program.
“Sporting and community groups play an important role in bringing people together, particularly in regional areas where it is one of the best ways for locals to get together," he said.
