Curran has been named skipper of SANFL team Glenelg for a second consecutive season.

He will take on the role solo this year, after being the team's co-captain in 2018.

His appointment comes off the back of an impressive season, where he finished runner-up in Glenelg's senior best and fairest and was also named in the SANFL's team of the season.

Curran said he had learned a lot during his co-captaincy last year.

"It was a bit tricky to start with as I was new to it," he said.

"You've got to be playing good footy yourself and leading with your actions, and then go from there.

"If you're struggling, others around you might struggle as well.

"I just started with trying to play well, and looked to build relationships with our players."

Curran hopes team success is on the horizon this year after Glenelg missed out on playing finals in 2018.

"I think we'll go pretty well. Having six wins to end last season doesn't really mean a lot coming into a new year, but the boys believe we can beat anyone now.

"We didn't lose many guys and have had a couple out of the AFL system come to us, and a few guys who were travelling overseas come back.

"We haven't got too many guys in rehab, which helps.

"The big thing is keeping everyone healthy. If we can do that, we're in for a good season."

Curran said he hoped his team could push deep into finals in 2019.

"The minimum we want to achieve is playing finals - we haven't been there for a while unfortunately," he said.

"We've got that mindset that we can beat anyone, anywhere. You're not playing to just compete - you want to be there on the last day of the season."

Curran said he had enjoyed his time in the South Australian league more as time had gone on.

"As you get older you don't stress about your own game quite so much, and obviously with the leadership position it's about helping teach and educate younger guys," he said. "I think you get more enjoyment out of that as you get older rather than getting a heap of kicks yourself."
