"I got a submission in 15 seconds so I was pretty happy with that," he said.
"It put me in the right frame of mind moving towards the state titles in South Australia, on April 28."
In 2018 Bywater topped the standings in the 85kg division while also claiming bronze in the open weight class.
"That will be fun to defend my title again," he said.
"I have already started preparing for that. I have to make a specific weight limit.
"That's on point at the moment - cardio, strength and technique have never really been better.
"Usually, after a competition, I relax due to the restrictive nature of training.
"This time I have continued on so I've really stayed disciplined," he said.
"You've got to really want it if you want to do well.
"In martial arts, you need to be in perfect condition otherwise you can cause injury to yourself."
Although Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is Bywater's speciality, he is training to make his mixed martial arts debut after competing in an inter-club kickboxing event at Ballarat in May.
