There mightn't have been $40,000 on the line but there was a whole lot of fun had by Stawell Primary School students in their annual 'Stawell Gift' race on Monday morning.

Grade three students from the primary school visited Central Park and the Stawell Gift hall of fame, learning about the more than 140 years of history of Australia's richest footrace from Stawell Athletic Club committee members.
"I think it's a great experience for the kids to learn a bit more about the Gift and the history of it," SAC committee member and 2019 Stawell Gift starter Ian Sibson said.

"The kids really enjoyed it which was great because the Gift is so important to the town and I think it's important for them to learn that."
The students then took to the hallowed turf of Central Park for their own version of the Stawell Gift.
Mr Sibson presided over heats and the finals, which were taken out by Olivia Hunter and Angus Stewart. The winners even got their own sashes and prop cheque.
"The athletic club has done a great job for a few years helping us put the event together - the kids all absolutely love it," Stawell Primary School teacher Jackie Pollock said.
"It is a significant event for our community so we believe it's really important for them to learn about it."
The students also contributed a piece of work which the athletic club will hang until next year's class visits for what has now become an annual tradition.
