Kalkee took a one goal lead with just minutes remaining in the game, but a late flourish of goals from returning player Brittany Keller was able to propel Harrow-Balmoral to victory.
Keller crossed to the Southern Roos from Nhill in the off-season and showed her value in round one, scoring the final five goals of the match as her side won 46-41.
Harrow-Balmoral coach Ebonie Salter said Keller was superb late in the match after a difficult start adjusting to her new teammates.
"Brittany was great, it wasn't really Sara Mccuish's day so Britt really carried that in the goal ring," Salter said.
"She started alright, her movement was really good but she just didn't quite have the confidence early.
"She really came through with the goods in the end."
Prior to round one, Salter said the key component for the A Grade side would be learning to gel as a team, with several new players introduced into the fold.
"It got better as the game went on," Salter said. "We really clicked with about five minutes left in the game and that is reflected on the scoreboard.
"Kalkee played really well. They were good right across the board, we just got there in the end."
In other contests, powerhouse outfits Laharum and Natimuk United showed their strength with thumping victories.
Natimuk United sent a message to the competition as they handsomely defeated 2018 finalist Swifts 14-49. The match was over by halftime with the Ewe's bursting away to a 11-26 lead away from home.
Laharum were in similarly ominous form against Noradjuha-Quantong, winning 51-27.
Laharum were able to keep the Bombers to just seven made baskets in the first half in an impressive defensive display.
New recruit Zandria Malone was named Laharum's best while Caitlin Story was second with her 31 goals.
An impressive final quarter from Rupanyup was enough for them to defeat Taylors Lake 55-34.
Rupanyup held a six goal advantage at three quarter time but burst away in the last, scoring 18 goals to five.
Rupanyup's Tayla Morgan was best on court with 34 goals.
Edenhope-Apsley also came away with a tight victory against an improved Pimpinio. The Saints led by just four goals heading into the final quarter but were able to finish strongly for the 55-44 win.
Ellie Thomas was the best for Edenhope-Apsley.
