The sharp shooter was named the Wimmera league's best player last season at only 18 years-old.
Buwalda said she enjoyed the accolades of last year but was wary of facing the unknowns of a new season.
"I probably wouldn't say that winning that award gives me confidence, so much - but it's nice to have it under the belt early going into the beginning of the year," she said.
"I think I was lucky to have good coaches and a very supportive team, which was very helpful. And probably some supportive parents as well. So there are all these major factors that help me play good netball."
The now 19 year-old took her Horsham Demons close to the premiership last year.
Horsham lost by one goal in the grand final against Horsham Saints, despite Buwalda's 51-goal display.
The Hatcher Medallist said the result soured personal success, but she was optimistic about the season ahead.
"It was definitely tough not to come away with the team medal, too. But I think it all starts again in a new season, so who knows what's going to happen this year," Buwalda said.
Buwalda was also named the best under-21 A Grade player last season, for the second consecutive year. She said the season ahead couldn't be judged solely on achieving the same heights.
"I think I'd say I'm more motivated by the experience than the results," she said. "A successful season will probably be getting into finals, finishing up in the top couple teams would be nice.
"But then again, any season that I develop my skills as a player and we grow as a club is always a successful season."
The goalie said being a member of Netball Victoria's under-19 regional training academy better prepared her for this year.
"There's definitely a few tips and tricks taken away from those sessions, playing under experienced coaches, and I'll try and bring those things back to Horsham," Buwalda said.
Gayle Leith remembered the young netballer from her time in the interleague squad. She said had been great to watch her develop on and off the court.
"I can remember young Emma starting off. She was pretty shy and only needed to be shown a few of the little things. All it took was for us to show her and she just hasn't looked back," she said.
"I think every opportunity that Emma's been given she's taken and her netball is only going to improve."
Horsham starts the 2019 season with a grand final rematch on Anzac Day.
