Regional Roads Victoria has spent more than $28 million on improving highway, between Stawell and the South Australian-border since July 2017.

Currently, surface works are either planned or in progress for eight sections of the highway.

Site locations include Dadswells Bridge, Deep Lead, Gerang Gerung, Green Lake, Lillimur, Nhill, St Helens Plains and Salisbury.

Regional Roads Victoria expects all works to be completed by June.

Regional Roads Victoria regional director Mal Kersting said the Western Highway was one of the state's busiest freight and travel routes.

"It's important that we ensure the Western Highway provides a safe, smooth journey for the thousands of people who travel it each and every day," he said.

Mr Kersting said the authority had also spent $20 million on safety upgrades between Stawell and the border.

"Upgrades included as part of the jointly funded $20-million package include the reconfiguration of Horsham's busy O'Callaghans Parade intersection," he said.

"We installed more visible traffic signals and road upgrades at various locations through to the South Australian border to cater for the high volume of freight traffic.

"There has also been a series of road rehabilitation projects."

Mr Kersting said overall the safety improvements on the highway had cost $28.3 million.

Other major roads in the region will also see improved surfaces before June.

Work is planned or in progress for the Wimmera Highway at Apsley, Dooen, Edenhope, Gre Gre, Jung, Logan, Murtoa, St Arnaud, Rupanyup, Marnoo, Burrum, and Vectis.

For the Henty Highway, surface works will fix sections of the highway at Brim, Dooen, Lah and McKenzie Creek.

Surface works are also planned or in progress on the Stawell-Warracknabeal Road at Rupanyup, Mellis, Glenorchy and Deep Lead; and on the Northern Grampians Road at Green Lake.

Regional Roads Victoria does not have any further upgrades scheduled for the Western Highway after June 2019.
