Before becoming a key component at Rupanyup, Woods, like many involved in netball and football clubs across the region, came to the Panthers through her partner.

After several successful years playing in Ballarat, Woods moved to the area to live on the farm with lifelong Rupanyup footballer Matt Weidemann, and decided to join the club.

"It was just easier to play at the same club - I think that's pretty much how we've got all of our netballers," Woods joked.

After three seasons as a player, Woods stepped into the head coaching role in 2017.

"I probably never really thought about coaching when I was a bit younger," Woods said. "But the opportunity came up for someone different to give it a go and I thought I'd give it a try.

"I have just really enjoyed the leadership of it. Having a young group and watching everyone grow, it's quite different but definitely enjoyable."

A finals berth has however alluded Rupanyup during Woods' tenure. The club has finished in seventh, just one spot out of finals, in three of the last five seasons.

Woods said it was something that certainly motivated her and the playing list.

"At the start of the year it's always something we talk about with the coaches and the leadership group," Woods said.

"The main aim is always to make finals. We've missed out the last couple of seasons but hopefully one day we'll be able to take that next step."

The finals spots are certainly up for grabs in 2019. Outside of the two powerhouse clubs Laharum and Natimuk United, the competition seems relatively even.

Rupanyup have had a reasonable start to the year, securing a strong win in round one against Taylors Lake before falling to Kalkee in round two.

However, important player Tayla Morgan - who has scored 44 goals across the first two weeks - will only be infrequently available as she travels back from Melbourne.

Morgan's sister and fellow important player Gemma Morgan will also only be available sporadically.

Rupanyup face a tough task on Saturday against a resurgent Harrow-Balmoral.

"Harrow are obviously always strong, they have maintained their key players and are looking really good," Wood said.

"I'm just hoping to be competitive and take it up to them the whole game."
