This is the first year the Wimmera has a senior women's football team in a competitive league. A team from the Horsham Demons will participate in a newly formed Western Victoria competition in June.
Players and coaches hope having a senior team will encourage more women of all ages to get involved in the booming sport.
Horsham Saints junior co-coach Garry Hallam said it was important to provide a pathway for the region's junior footballers.
"One of the hardest things has been players becoming too old for juniors, and they have nothing to go into," Hallam said. "There are a lot of talented young girls around here, but they need to be able to see that pathway."
Horsham Saints' star and Greater Western Victoria Rebels player Kayetlan Harris is one of the Wimmera's bright prospects.
Harris, 17, said she always wanted to play football, but only got the chance when three teams from the Wimmera - Horsham Demons, Horsham Saints and Stawell Warriors - joined the Deakin University Female Football League in 2017.
"When I was probably about three years-old, Dad wanted to have a kick in the backyard... so it started from there," Harris said.
"I played some school footy, then in 2017 I played here with the Saints and loved it. Winning the flag in 2017 was just so good."
Harris said it was inspiring to watch three girls from the Rebels 2018 team now playing for Geelong in the AFLW.
"Being down there and playing with girls like Rene Caris, Georgia Clarke and Sophie Van De Heuvel ... it shows you where you can go," Harris said.
Women's football in the Wimmera is also open to all skill levels. Horsham Demons' women's football representative Terry Arnel encouraged any juniors to try the sport.
"Probably a third of our list are new to the concept this year," Arnel said. "We're always looking for anyone wanting to come down and get involved."
