Beaufort Police were called to help round up some loose camels near the Ben Major Track off Amphitheatre Road, Mount Lonarch about 11pm on Saturday night.
"It looks like they were someone's pets that have somehow gotten free," Beaufort Acting Sergeant Peter Byvoet said.
"We ended up returning them safely with no harm caused. Had we not tracked them down they had the potential to cause a bit of havoc on the roads, especially that late at night."
Acting Sergeant Byvoet said it was the first time he has responded to an incident involving camels in the region.
Sally Millard, the owner of the camels, said someone had deliberately let the animals out and chased them down the road. They were found "shaking and terrified" at nearby Cosmopolitan dam after the chain on their gate was cut.
"It's frustrating and upsetting but it won't stop us. We'll be putting security cameras up," Ms Millard said.
The camels were from the newly-established Father Bob's Lourdes Camel Sanctuary, a partnership between farm owners Sally and Mick Millard and the Father Bob Maguire Foundation. Read more here
A comedy fundraiser in Melbourne on Sunday night raised $25,000 to help build amenities at the farm so the foundation can use it for therapy and day visits.
