It was fantastic to hold a recent Mallee candidates forum in St Arnaud ahead of the recent federal election.
We had a great turnout from our community and candidates alike, with the entire forum being broadcast by the ABC Wimmera, Ballarat, Mildura Swan Hill and Central Victoria.
This was a great opportunity for our community to ask questions and hear directly from the candidates on issues important to them.
We've received some fantastic funding news around two of our sport and recreation facilities within the shire, with North Park in Stawell, and Lord Nelson Park in St Arnaud, both receiving $500,000 each to help with the development of multipurpose changerooms, among other upgrades.
While these upgrades will benefit our entire community, they will especially help promote and further push female sports participation with the construction of female-friendly change rooms at both facilities.
We encourage our residents to jump onto our website to take a look at the proposed budget and to leave us some feedback.
We released our proposed 2019-20 Council Budget which highlights $9.9 million in road spending, as well as a number of upgrades to our sports and recreation facilities within the shire, which our community has been waiting a long time for.
We encourage our residents to jump onto our website to take a look at the proposed budget and to leave us some feedback, or alternatively pop into either of our customer service offices to obtain a copy.
We also amended our 2017-21 Council Plan, which is reviewed every year and changes made to better reflect our current situation after we complete certain achievements (also on website).
We hosted the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria and her husband, Mr Anthony Howard AM QC on a recent three-day tour of the Northern Grampians Shire.
Locations that the Governor toured included Seppelt's in Great Western, a walk along the Grampians Trail Walk to Lakeview Lookout and a visit to Bunjil's Shelter in Halls Gap, a look at our state of the art SMARTfit technology at Stawell Sports & Aquatic Centre, the Stawell Gold Mine, a visit to the Goode farm just outside of St Arnaud, and a tour of Neoen's Bulgana Green Power Hub.
Speaking of Neoen, they were a major sponsor of the hugely successful Grampians Grape Escape event, which continues to go from strength to strength in receiving high visitation rates along with high level domestic and international exposure.
It's also great to see some recent rainfall hitting our shire. Last year's harvest was particularly difficult for many of our farmers so hopefully, this is the start of more rain to come.
To finish, I'd like to congratulate the Stawell Gift on being a recent recipient of the International Association of Athletics Federations' World Athletics Plaque.
This award receives worldwide recognition and highlights iconic and historic athletics competitions, careers, venues, performances and culture, which means our own Gift will sit among other recipients such as Jesse Owens, Emil Zatopek and Australia's Betty Cuthbert.
Congratulations to everyone involved with this incredible honour, you have done us all proud.
