Justin Parish, 41, appeared in Horsham Magistrates' Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to a number of offences including possessing a prohibited weapon and drug trafficking.
The court heard that on November 1, police searched Parish's house in Dimboola.
Police located 499 grams of cannabis in the bedroom, along with 61 cannabis seeds and two mobile phones.
In the rear shed of the property, police also found seven grams of cannabis along with a 20 prohibited weapons including samurai swords, throwing blades, daggers and a butterfly knife.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Michelle Wentworth said the street value of the cannabis was more than $5000.
Police analysed Parish's mobile phone and found 37 different conversations about drug trafficking between October 8 and October 23.
Parish told police he wasn't trafficking the cannabis, but giving it to his friends.
He also told police he smoked cannabis every day.
Defence lawyer Simon Torpy argued Parish gave cannabis to his friends and did not run a commercial operation.
Parish told the court that most of the weapons had been bought at markets and shops.
"I had no idea it was an issue until I was arrested," he said.
"When we bought them all we had to do was show our driver's licence."
Magistrate Franz Holzer said the amount of cannabis was twice the amount police considered traffickable.
He ordered Parish to do 300 hours of community work over a two year period.
Mr Holzer told Parish to abandon any ideas about drug trafficking in the future.
"People are tired of drugs in their community," he said.
"You have escaped jail time by the skin of your teeth."
