The man who passed away at MacKenzie Falls on Monday has been identified as a 28-year-old, from Culburra Beach near Jervis Bay in NSW.
Stawell acting sergeant Bryan Anderson said the man was witnessed being short of breath as he was climbing up the stairs on the side of the falls.
"He stopped for a rest and collapsed shortly after," acting sergeant Anderson said.
Monday:
A BUSHWALKER has died after collapsing near MacKenzie Falls on Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews attended the incident in an area along the MacKenzie River through Zumsteins at 3.45pm.
The NSW man was believed to be in his thirties.
Victoria Police issued a statement.
"Police and emergency were called after a man became unwell at MacKenzie Falls this afternoon," the statement read.
"The man was with a group of people when he collapsed about 3.45pm.
"Police will prepare a report for the coroner and the death is not being treated as suspicious."
Stawell State Emergency Service unit deputy controller Brodie Stewart said volunteers assisted ambulance personnel.
"Once we arrived we were notified the person was deceased and it would be a recovery operation," he said.
