"When I was 16 and getting my hair permed and wanted to get a facial, the lady said, 'Doreen do not wear make-up on your face'," she laughed.
She said not smoking, not drinking and "not going out with bad men" also helped her maintain a healthy life.
"My husband was the only one. It was love at first sight," she said.
Mrs Hammond celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family at her Horsham home on Friday.
Originally from King's Lynn in England, Mrs Hammond was born on June 14, 1929.
She came to Australia with husband Jack Hammond and her two children 58 years ago and they settled in Horsham.
"We moved here because of my husband's job. He worked at the Horsham State Electricity Company," she said.
She said she was happy to celebrate her big day with her two children, Peter and Jane, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs Hammond said she missed her husband dearly on the special occasion.
"I look at my husband's photograph and tell him that, 'you are not here'," she said.
Mrs Hammond will continue her birthday celebrations on Saturday at the Horsham RSL.
