Flooding was so severe the boundary was shortened, and both sides agreed to play just 15 minute quarters.
AFL Wimmera-Mallee general manager Stephen McQueen said the right decision was made.
"It's all to do with safety and with something like this common sense has to prevail," he said.
"It was mutually agreed upon by the two clubs, and they got in touch with the league to check that they were alright to do that.
"They sent through pictures, and it wasn't looking good. It was a mess, so they made the right decision."
With the wet weather turning the match into a slog, Pimpinio threatened to win their first game for the season and trailed by just two points at three-quarter time.
Rupanyup eventually pushed ahead to secure a 10-point win, but the Panthers would be disappointed to have missed out on a good opportunity to boost their lowly percentage of 74.
