Brodie Williams, 20, appeared in Horsham Magistrates' Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to drink-driving.
The court heard that Williams was driving on George Street, Horsham, on January 20.
Police stopped and breath tested. He recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.160.
He told the court he had had a "big night" the night before at Wilson's nightclub.
Magistrate Peter Dunn asked Williams how he didn't think he would be over the limit, when his limit was zero.
"You must have had 20 or more standard drinks - you need to get your brain into gear," he said.
"What if you hit someone? At least you get to go home at night and your mother is not visiting you at Horsham cemetery, because that's what happens."
Mr Dunn said he would halve the standard fine if Williams spoke to his football teammates about his actions.
"You need to tell them how foolish you were. I might even come along to hear you say it," he said.
Williams plays for the Ararat Eagles.
Mr Dunn also cancelled and disqualified Williams' driver's licence for 16 months and fined him $500.
