Horsham fire brigade captain John St Clair said two trucks and 12 firefighters headed to an address in Fisher Square at 6.10pm.
"When we got there we found a lady in the house had a pot of oil on the stove which caught fire," he said.
"Lucky for us she was smart enough to put a fire blanket and contain the flames to the pot, so 90 per cent of our work was to remove smoke out of the building.
Captain St Clair said people cooking with oil needed to make sure the stove was turned off at the pot or pan moved off the burner when they weren't attending to it.
He said this winter had been quiet compared to most for the Horsham fire brigade.
