Ms Pilgrim, 23, received the Hindmarsh Shire Youth Award last week at a Nhill Agricultural and Pastoral Society meeting.

The Hindmarsh Shire Youth Awards were originally planned for earlier in the year but the council was unable to proceed.

Ms Pilgrim is the Nhill Young Farmers Group president and a representative on the Young Farmers Advisory Council.

"Volunteering is something you do to help, and you don't expected any recognition for it. But it is really nice when you do get recognised for the hard work," she said.

Ms Pilgrim said Nhill Agricultural and Pastoral Society nominated her for the award. She joined the organisation in 2018 and is now the junior vice-president.

"The more young people that volunteer their time and get involved, the better off we will be in the future and our traditions will be able to be upheld," she said.

Hindmarsh Shire councillor Rob Gersch said Ms Pilgrim organised the Young Farmers Challenge at the 2018 Nhill Show, and helped run the rural ambassador awards.

Ms Pilgrim was the driving force behind re-establishing the Nhill and District Young Farmers after a recess of more than 25 years. The club now has a membership of about 50 young farmers.

"As president of the young farmers, Jessica has been able to instill some of her passion and enthusiasm into the group and they now collectively address many issues facing young farmers in our district," Cr Gersch said.

Cr Gersch said the council believed it was important to acknowledge young people in the community.

He said more youth awards will be presented in other Hindmarsh shire towns later this year.
