Police said the 66-year-old was driving a Kia Carnival north along Dunolly-Rheola Road at Murphy's Creek -between St Arnaud and Bendigo - around 4pm on Saturday, when it collided with a HR Holden.
She was airlifted to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital in a serious condition with chest injuries.
On Monday, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed her condition had improved to stable.
The driver of the Holden, a 54-year-old man from Hillcrest southwest of Ballarat, was also airlifted to hospital with life threatening injuries.
Police said the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
