HORSHAM residents will soon have access to a brand new car park in a prime CBD location.
Horsham Anglican Church has transformed its unused block of land next door into a car park, which is expected to open within two weeks.
The project has been two years in the making with the church receiving approval for it last year.
Father Denis Sotiriadis said the car park would benefit the whole Horsham community and not just church members.
"It will be mainly used for funerals and Lister House Medical Clinic. We built it with them in mind; they have contributed to it financially and will be ongoing partners with us," he said.
"We wanted to make sure the car park is used throughout the week, not just on Sundays and the parishioners thought it was really important to use it for a good cause. We're Christian and should be helping the community in a visible way."
Church members have helped raised $37,000 for the project so far. The total cost of the project is about $105,000.
Father Sotiriadis said the community had been very supportive of the project.
"We would love to thank those who have contributed thus far," he said.
Project manager Keith Starick said there was still work to be done.
"We're about halfway through the final project but it is at a stage that it can be used as soon as signs are put up and the lines mapped out," he said.
"We would like to get it to the next stage so it can get raised to the curb channel. At the moment it has an aggregate finish on it. We've got regulations with the council where we need drainage."
The free car park will have 28, two hour spaces.
Horsham Anglican Church is the base church for the district. Parishioners also travel from Natimuk, Rupanyup and Murtoa.
