Almost 100 residents took part in the fourth annual walk at Horsham's Weir Park.

The walk helps raise funding for research and awareness of the disease, and is organised by the Wimmera Parkinson's Peer Support Group.

Group secretary John McRoberts' wife was diagnosed with Parkinson's several years ago. He said her diagnosis had greatly affected both their lives.

"It changes our lives quite considerably. She became more aware of her limitation and wasn't able to do things that she had always done," he said.

"Parkinson's doesn't control her life, but it is something that she has learned to deal with and it has changed her lifestyle."

Mr McRoberts said it was important for people to support fundraising efforts for the Parkinson's research.

"This group started about 30 years ago. We have since found out that the Wimmera has one of the highest rates for Parkinson's disease per capita in the state," he said.

The two-kilometre walk started at Weir Park and weaved its way into the wetlands, with participants going at their own pace.

Mr McRoberts said the group hoped to raise $12,000 from this year's event.
