WIMMERA farmers looking for workers during the busy harvest period might be able to hire people from drought-affected areas of the country.

That's the idea Horsham agronomist Matthew Sparke had, as a way to support those doing it tough, and lighten the load for Wimmera growers.
Mr Sparke said there was demand for seasonal workers in the Wimmera coming into harvest.
"The season is looking particularly good for us at the moment, so harvest will become a logistical jigsaw about how we do it," he said.
"After seeing some striking images of the conditions up north and having several of my clients asking if I know of anyone looking for work, I started to explore the merits of encouraging workers to travel down to Victoria to gain some work and new experiences during the harvest period.
"I've made a lot of phone calls and spoken to a lot of people in the north about this."
Mr Sparke said with the continuing drought in northern Australia, he hoped the Wimmera could attract a number of people for seasonal work.
"People like university students or young people on farms who have flexibility," he said.
"It could even be people in towns, who might be a mechanic or involved in agriculture in some way - their cash flow might not be travelling too well at the moment."
Skillinvest has come on board and is now calling for expressions of interest from farmers looking to hire seasonal workers.
Mr Sparke said Skillinvest would handle the logistics of the project.
He said the demand for workers was there.
"I've already had a number of phone calls from farmers wanting labour, so now we just need to find out how big the desire is from people in the north to come down," he said.
"Everyone I have spoken to says it is a great idea and a great way to give young people experience.
"It will also give them a chance to go back to rural towns in Queensland and NSW where things are tough, with a bit of money in their pockets."
Skillinvest labour hire consultant Daniel Brandon said employers should fill out an online survey about their vacancies.
"A short survey has been developed for employers to identify their requirements and assist with the expression of interest stage," he said.
Mr Brandon said Skillinvest would take care of all administration, workplace induction and safety checks, payment of wages, taxation and superannuation.

Mr Brandon said once the demand and needs were determined Skillinvest would start recruitment across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
