Great question.
As many of our young people head into their final exams for years 11 and 12, I'm sure that coming to the 'pointy end' of secondary school, is prompting that very question.
Some students will have a focused goal, a target of where they want to end up.
While others may have one or two options in mind for their career path, and still others will have no idea at all, at this stage, what they would like to pursue.
In her book Who you are is what you do......making life choices after school, Heather McAllister encourages the young reader to consider those things that they enjoy and are good at.
This could well give some clues for a career path decision.
We are all different, university is not for everyone, but for some it is essential.
I left school at the end of year 11, back in 1975.
I was keen to get out into the big wide world and an apprenticeship was my pathway to do that.
Our community lost a local hero last week.
Jimmy Taylor from Natimuk passed away all of a sudden.
Throughout his life, Jim had a variety of jobs including shearing, working on the railway and over 12 years with the local council.
He took pride in driving that little green mower throughout Natimuk, keeping the place looking good.
Here was a chap, happy with his career choice, making a difference in his community and enjoying life. That green mower was designed by someone, manufactured by someone, sold by someone and maintained by someone - all-important careers in our community.
We need doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers, manufacturers, sales people, mechanics and people willing to drive that mower up and down, around and around.
Best wishes to our young people with your exams and your future decisions and keep in mind: "The only place that 'Success' comes before 'Work'... is in the dictionary".(Stubby Currence 1935)
Anne and I have attended some recent community events including the Horsham Show, Spring Garden Festival, the Apex Club Changeover Dinner and the 'Mama Mia' production in our town hall. All of these and more, showcasing good things happening in our community.
Thank you for what you do.
