Horsham Fire Brigade captain John St Clair said three fire trucks headed to the house on Citrus Avenue around 7.15pm.
"The gentleman was firing up the barbecue on the back patio for dinner, and due to a loose connection gas was leaking out towards the flames of the barbecue," he said.
"This then ignited the gas cylinder."
Mr St Clair said the man reacted quickly by throwing a wet towel over the cylinder, preventing the fire from spreading.
"It's a good reminder coming into summer to make sure all your fittings have been inspected and are nice and tight. There were no injuries - everyone's good."
Mr St Clair said people could check their barbecue fittings by squirting soaping water over the connections.
"If it starts to bubble, it's not tight enough," he said.
