West Wimmera's Ruby James has been appointed captain of the Western Waves' under-17 side, while Homers' Georgia Baker-Miller has been appointed co-captain of the under-14 team.
James said it was a welcomed shock when the decision was announced at the Waves' last training session.
"I wasn't expecting it at all. I thought there were other girls in the team who deserved it," James said.
"(But) I am pretty proud of it. My coaches see me as a leader, and they were telling me afterwards that they wouldn't have given it to anyone else, which was nice to hear."
Western Waves under-14 coach Grace Lee said Baker-Miller set a great example for her teammates.
"This is her third year in the team, and her experience and positivity has helped her being selected as co-captain," Lee said.
"Her ability to take on feedback and continually improve as a player is great, and it is something a lot of other players look up to."
James, who is eligible for the under-17s for two more seasons, said she was looking forward to the season getting underway.
"There's definitely a bit of added pressure there, but I'm trying not to think about it," James said.
"I'm hoping it is an enjoyable season."
Lee also said James led by example.
"She's a quiet achiever," Lee said. "She takes on the challenge, sets a great example for younger players as a player, and as a person."
The under-17 and under-14 girls will play their first match in Horsham on December 1.
The under-14s will play at Dimboola Road Oval, while the under-17s will play at City Oval.
