The network sent text messages to customers which said the work would take place for about seven days and could impact phone service at various times.
Telstra regional general manager Steve Tinker said there might be disruptions to Telstra's 3G and 4G mobile services as well as EFTPOS terminals connected to the mobile network.
"While we've carefully planned this upgrade work to minimise disruption, there may be some impacts to mobile services which are unavoidable," he said. "We know there's never a perfect time to schedule upgrade work and we apologise for the interruption but once we're finished it will mean better mobile services for our customers."
A Telstra spokesman said EFTPOS customers could contact their financial institution as their terminals may be capable of connecting to fixed line Wi-Fi during this time.
He said customers may receive some overlapping coverage from other nearby mobile sites during the upgrades.
The spokesman said the work would not affect fixed line services such as NBN, fixed line telephone and ADSL services and that customers could check the latest information about outages at outages.telstra.com/.
Business Horsham deputy chairman Paul Atherton said retailers should review their manual payment systems and make sure these are in place ahead of potential outages.
"They need to be ready, otherwise they won't be able to take payments," he said.
