The jostling for a spot in the A Grade Cornell Schwedes A Grade One Day Grand Final is heating up.
With only two rounds left the top five teams Noradjuha/Toolondo Bullants, Horsham Saints, Homers, Rup/Minyip and Laharum all have a chance of claiming a spot in the day/night grand final to be held at the City Oval on Sunday March 8, 2020.
Things might become a little clearer this weekend with Laharum and Horsham Saints playing at the City Oval under lights and the Bullants hosting Rup/Minyip at home.
If these games go based on ladder position and Homers win over Colts the round nine clash between the Bullants and Saints match will be a pivotal game to see who goes onto the big dance.
Last Saturday saw Jung Tigers venture to the slopes of the Grampians to play Laharum. Laharum, full of confidence after beating Jung in the last round, put together a score of 6/170 off their 40 overs. Ben Peucker put together 40 to hold the innings together after the loss of three early wickets. Brody Smith who has moved to Laharum from Homers contributed with 26. Left armer Tyler Puls took the new ball for Jung and returned a tidy 3/22 off his eight overs. Angus Adams put together a tidy spell of leg spin taking 2/28, including the key wicket of Daniel Griffiths. Jung were in early strife at 3/24 but managed to resurrect the innings through Adams who put together 43. Marty Knight chimed in with 26 but his departure at 9/144 - stumped off the bowling of Jack Parfett-Oliver - was the final straw. Laharum winners by 13 runs.
At the City Oval Bullants and Colts game Jordan McDonald of the Bullants was the sensation of the day taking 4/8 off his eight overs. Colts, who won the toss and batted were in trouble early and only managed to make 10/94 off 27 overs. Mark Thomas was the highest scorer before being bowled by Brendan Wills. An opening partnership of 60 between Kent Hair and Justtin Combe was the start the Bullants were looking for. Hair was top scorer with 42 before being dismissed off the bowling of Logan Miller. Bullants won by eight wickets.
The Coughlin Park clash between Horsham Saints and Blackheath/Dimboola might have been a foregone conclusion in the minds of most but the visitors would have none of that. There has been some big scores on the Coughlin Park deck this season, but this was the first A grade one day match so the par score was unknown. Batting first Saints would have been satisfied with 8/177 off their 40 overs, especially with Ben Sawyer and Gary Davidson dismissed cheaply by Sam Polock. Corey Smith made a responsible 70 and Tony Caccaviello who seems to be enjoying batting higher than the number 11 that his Geelong club earmarked him to last season made 33 of 27 balls. When the visitors started their innings they were soon up against at 3/41. The fourth wicket partnership between Elliot Braithwaite and veteran Mick McGough of 108 runs changed the complexion of the game. With 29 runs to win Braithwaite was dismissed for 62 and seven runs later McGough was gone for 53. From this position a victory was a tough ask and the gallant Blackheath/Dimboola run out of momentum to lose by five runs.
Youngster Jett Hopper led Homers to a four wicket victory over Rup/Minyip at Rupanyup. The home team batted first but was in trouble at 4/20 after last round's big scorers Dan Clark and Brayden Ison failing to follow up. Captain Daniel Schaper made a quick 38 to restore the innings, but the wash up of 8/130 of 40 overs didn't look enough to defend. Homers found themselves in early trouble when the run chase began. Jett Hopper and his uncle Simon Hopper put together a partnership of 49 runs before S Hopper was dismissed. Craig Britten joined Jett Hopper and hit 17 off 6 balls, but his dismissal on 112 left Jett Hopper with a job to do and that's what he did making 35.
