Minyip has not hosted a Wimmera Football League fixture since July 2018, as the surface was not deemed fit for use this season.
Minyip Recreation Reserve chairman Trent Kerrins said a lot of work had gone into the project to this point.
"They finished laser levelling about a week ago and combed about 2000 tonnes of dirt through," he said.
"I suppose it's been three or four months since the start of the project and all the volunteer labour to get it ready for laser levelling.
"We have had a lot of volunteer labour."
The work will now focus on the installation a new sprinkler system to address the unevenness that plagued the oval previously.
"The next step is putting some sprinklers in the ground now. That will be the next project and may take a week or two," Mr Kerrins said.
"It's a new watering system that you will just program it as you need it on.
"(The oval) was too up and down. We didn't realise how bad it was until we started doing (the works) and carting dirt in.
"(With) the old sprinkler system, some parts were getting more water than others."
Mr Kerrins was optimistic the oval would be returned to its natural green hue early next year.
"We're hoping to have the grass in by January," he said. "Hopefully, in the new year sometime it will be green."
Locations for the 2020 Wimmera Football League season are yet to be finalised.
Minyip-Murtoa is due to start its premiership defence at home against Horsham.
Mr Kerrins was hopeful the Burras would be back in Minyip by the middle of the season.
"We probably won't play football there straight away, but we're hoping (to be playing there again) around June," he said. "It will be good for the whole town. It just gives the town a bit more buzz. People enjoy it. "
