Statements on parking
I READ Horsham council's statements on "no plans for parallel parking" in the CBD in Friday's Wimmera Mail-Times.

No is a lot different to no plans. Did they not attend the traffic workshops?
Council's staff were full on - talking about streetscaping, bike trails and parallel parking and saying this is what is going to happen in Pynsent and Wilson streets and Roberts Avenue and around the corner into Firebrace Street.
Council staff showed us what these streets would look like with bike trails and parallel parking.
There was no if's or maybe's - this will happen. Your staff were determined this was happening and everyone at the workshops believed them.
To Mayor Mark Radford, chief executive Sunil Bhalla and Councillor Pam Clarke: The staff at the workshop told us completely different to your statement in Friday's Mail-Times and the concept drawings in your strategy reports show bike trails with parallel parking in Firebrace Street. Who do you expect your ratepayers to believe?
From 2009 to 2011, I was part of a group in VCAT that saved the Town Hall and forced council to protect the number of parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the Town Hall.
We did this to make sure local traders had customer parking available when functions were at the Town Hall.
Parallel parking would remove two-thirds of the parks from these streets.
The removal of angle parking from these streets for whatever reason is non-negotiable.
These shop owners are very protective of their customer car parks and must stay.

Christmas wishes
AS WE prepare to celebrate Christmas and the arrival of a new decade, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the Lowan electorate a very Merry Christmas and a happy, safe and prosperous New Year.
The Christmas and New Year holiday season is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and to reflect on the important things in life. I hope everyone enjoys this time but also remains vigilant and safe on our roads, near the water, out enjoying nature and even in the backyard.
Please take the time to look out for others in our community, to extend the hand of friendship and to offer the spirit of Christmas to those around you, remembering that the strength and generosity of our rural communities is one of our greatest assets.
I encourage everyone to support our local traders as we shop for the wide array of products required for the festive season.
It has been a privilege to represent the people of Lowan in 2019. I have greatly enjoyed the diversity of the many individuals, groups and organisations I have worked with to help make western Victoria a better place to live and work.
Again, a very Merry Christmas and a happy, safe and prosperous New Year to everyone across the Lowan electorate.
Emma Kealy, Member for Lowan
