Weddell - who finished second in the Wimmera Football League's vote count this season - said he was looking to forward to testing himself at a higher standard.
"It's exciting. It's obviously a new adventure, so I'm looking forward to it," he said.
"The past couple of seasons I've been keen (to play at that standard), but I just haven't gotten around to it.
"I'm looking at it as a mini long-term move. I don't want to go there just for the footy season; I want to be there for a couple of years."
The Aspley Hornets - based in Brisbane's northern suburbs - have been one of the NEAFL's recent pacesetters, making finals the past seven seasons.
"It's a family sort of club, just like any country footy club down here. They've been fairly strong the past couple of years," Weddell said.
"They've lost the last three preliminary finals so (we're) obviously looking to go one step further next year.
"I just want to do my best for the team and improve my footy."
Weddell makes the move with experience in the country's north under his belt, having played for Northern Territory Football League outfit Waratah the past two seasons.
The defender won Waratah's best and fairest last season, and it was that connection that pushed the Aspley move.
"My mate Abe Ankers, who I played with in the NTFL, heard that I was keen (to play in the NEAFL) and he signed with Aspley beforehand. So it was just through him pretty much," Weddell said.
Ankers was captain of the now-defunct NEAFL club NT Thunder, who Minyip-Murtoa export Kieran Delahunty played for before moving to Perth in the WAFL.
Weddell started his football career with Noradjuha-Quantong in the Horsham District league, before moving to the Giants.
The dual Horsham District and Wimmera league interleague representative said he leaves the Giants with fond memories.
"It's been unbelievable. If I ever move back to Horsham I can definitely see myself going back there (to the Giants), for sure," Weddell said.
Weddell said he had continued training and may sneak in an NTFL game before he leaves Horsham at the end of January.
"I might end up going for one or two games (with Waratah) potentially," he said. "I've been doing my own stuff at the moment, but I'm leaving Horsham at the end of January so as soon as I get up there, I'll get into training with Aspley."
